Sitting in a dark, dank prison cell in paris, serving a life sentence for murder, Abbie Elliot tries to piece together the story she came to be here. It all happened in Monte Carlo, where she was having the holiday of a lifetime with her three best friends away from their stilling lives, and husbands. Abbie remembers casinos, nightclubs, champagne and private yachts. The next thing she can remember is a swarm of police storming the yacht and arresting her and her friends. Abbie has been set up, she knows it. But now she must find out who would do this to her, and why. Or she will spend the rest of her life rotting in that cell. [Arrow Books, 2013]

Harm done / Ruth Rendell. - London : Arrow Books, 2000. - [6], 467 s. ; 18 cm.
Tekst w jęz. ang.
The search for the body commenced. Then the victim walked into town. Behind the picture-postcard façade of Kingsmarkham lies a community rife with violence, betrayal, and a taste for vengeance. When sixteen-year-old Lizzie Cromwell reappears no one knows where she has been, including Lizzie herself. Inspector Wexford thinks she was with a boyfriend. But the disappearance of a three-year-old girl casts a more ominous light on events. And when the public's outrage turns toward a recently released pederast and another suspect turns up stabbed to death, Wexford must try to unravel the mystery before any more bodies appear, and before a mob of local vigilantes metes out a rough justice to their least favorite suspect. In Harm Done, the violence is near at hand, and evil lies just a few doors down the block. [ww.amazon.com, 2000]

Tekst w jęz. ang.
Sergeant Caleb Martin of Kingsmarkham CID had no idea Just how terminally unlucky the thirteenth of May Gould prove. Even alive, he could have no inkling of the chain of bloody events to follow... At first the bloodbath at Tancred House looks like the desperate work of a burglar panicked into murder. The sole survivor of the massacre, seventeen-year-old Daisy Flory, remembers the events imperfectly and her confused account of the fatal night seems to confirm this theory. But more and more, Chief Inspector Wexford is convinced that the crime lies closer to home and that is has sinister links to the murder of sergeant Martin some ten months earlier... Tekst w języku angielskim.
The office of the public defender is not known as a training ground for bright young litigators. Clay Carter has been there too long and, like most of his colleagues, dreams of a better job in a real firm. When he reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week. As he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession's newest king of torts... Brilliant, beautiful and ambitious, New Orleans legal student Darby Shaw little realises that her speculative brief will penetrate to the highest levels of power in Washington and cause shockwaves there. Shockwaves that will see her boyfriend atomised in a bomb blast, that will send hired killers chasing after her, that will propel her across the country to meet investigative reporter Gray Grantham, the one man who is as near the truth as she is. Tekst w języku angielskim.
In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark trial begins. There are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake and soon it swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juror is convinced he's being watched. Soon they have to be sequestered. Then a tip from an anonymous young woman suggests she is able to predict the jurors' increasingly odd behaviour. Is the jury somehow being manipulated, or even controlled? If so, by whom? And, more importantly, why? [Random House, 1996]

There are crimes of blood, ad there are crimes which are... just crimes. The people of Clanton, Mississippi? have no doubt as to which is which when Carl Lee Hailey guns down the hoodlums who have raped his ten-year-old child. There are crimes of race and creed and colour. And so when people outside of Clanton hear that a black man has killed two whites, the town is filled with an angry mob determined to tear down, burn and destroy anything and everyone that opposes them. And there are cases which can make or break the career of a young lawyer and such a case is the defend of Carl Lee Hailey to Jake Brigance. In the maelstrom that has become Clanton he'll do anything to defend his client, his case and, ultimately, his life and the lives of his family. [Random House, 1992]

In a landmark trial in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against the giant Krane chemical company:its dumping of toxic waste has caused the worst cancer cluster in history. The verdict is a triumph for Wes and Mary Grace Payton, the small husband-and-wife legal team who have fought Krane for years. Now nothing stands in the way of million-dollar settlements for all of Kranes victims. Except for one thing: the appeal Krane's billionaire owner has decided not one cent will be paid to any of the plaintiffs. Instead he will buy himself some justice at the Supreme Court. Trumble is a minimum security federal prison, home to drug dealers, bank robbers, swindlers, embezzlers, tax evaders, and three former judges who call themselves The Brethren. They meet each day in the law library where they spend hours writing letters. They are fine-tuning a mail scam, and it's starting to pay big. The money is pouring in. But then their little scam goes awry. It ensnares the wrong victim, a powerful man on the outside, a man with dangerous friends, and The Brethren's days of quietly marking time are over. In his final hours in the Oval Office the outgoing President grants a full pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. It's a controversial move, but what no one else knows is that the presidential pardon comes as a result of enormous pressure from the CIA. They claim that Backman may have obtained secrets that would compromise the world's most sophisticated satellite surveillance system. Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane; he is given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, once he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive - there's no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is: who will kill him? The innocent man / John Grisham. - London : Arrow Books - The Random House Group Limited, 2007. - [6], 466 stron, [8] stron tablic : fotografie ; 18 cm.
Tekst w języku angielskim.
In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence that would shatter a man’s already broken life… and let a true killer go free. Impeccably researched, grippingly told, filled with eleventh-hour drama, John Grisham’s first work of nonfiction reads like a page-turning legal thriller. It is a book that will terrify anyone who believes in the presumption of innocence a book no American can afford to miss. [www.goodreads.com]

In 1970, one of Mississippi s more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23-year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison. But in Mississippi in 1970, life didn't necessarily mean life, and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began. This begins the new novel from John Grisham, a story inspired by his own childhood in rural Arkansas. The narrator is a seven year old farm boy named Luke Chandler, who lives in the cotton fields with his parents and grandparents in a little house that's never been painted. The Chandlers farm eighty acres that they rent, not own, and when the cotton is ready they hire a truckload of Mexicans and a family from the Ozarks to help harvest it. For six weeks they pick cotton, battling the heat, the rain, the fatigue, and sometimes, each other. As the weeks pass Luke sees and hears things no seven year old could possibly be prepared for, and finds himself keeping secrets that not only threaten the crop but will change the lives of the Chandlers forever. A Painted House is a moving story of one boy's journey from innocence to experience. [www.goodreads.com]

Rick Dockery was a quarterback for one of America's most famous football teams when he gave arguably the worst performance in his league's history. Overnight Rick became a laughing stock and unemployable in his own country. But somehow Rick's agent finds him a job. He is guaranteed a starting position and a salary. The only problem is that the team that wants him is in Parma, Italy. The American football league in Italy is tiny and, unlike Rick, the Italian players only get paid in free meals. Rick has never been to Italy, so it's no surprise that the country has a few surprises for him. What follows is a delightful, heart-warming story of an innocent abroad. [Random House, 2008]
