Boy in the water / Stephen Dobyns. - London : Penguin Books, 2000. - 545, [1] s. ; 18 cm.
Jim Hawthorne is punishing himself. A clinical psychologist, he's racked with guilt over the death of his wife and daughter in a fire set by one of his young patients. He flees his cushy West Coast life and ditches his career to take a thankless job as headmaster at Bishop's Hill Academy, a fifth-rate New Hampshire boarding school for troubled children that's on the verge of bankruptcy. Saving the school is a noble goal, but Hawthorne has little idea just how corrupt Bishop's Hill is. The staff are secretive, watchful - as if they are frightened of something. He becomes the victim of malicious rumours and cruel jokes. And then a young boy is found dead, floating face down in the swimming pool....
